The problem is that the staff take up convention space. If there are 30 staff members, that is 30 badges that the con loses money on. They cannot sell those 30 badges, as the space is taken. Now, I don't know the hard number for staff members, but I'm pretty sure there are at least 30. That alone is over $1000. With the amount of staff that is needed, it's just not feasible to not have staff pay.

Not to cause a ruckus, just stopping in to state a fact, every convention I've staffed or volunteered at you were not required to pay for a badge. For some smaller conventions regular volunteers paid for their badge and were refunded after the convention or compensated with perks, so I'd certainly understand if Everfree worked that way. But staff members (not volunteers, who typically work less hours and don't oversee anything major) paying for a badge is not something I have run into before.

Perhaps the two terms staff and volunteer are being mixed up in regards to Smarebare's inquiry?

Being that we are a first year con, we can't afford to compensate for badges. I know that other first cons have done this before. It just depends on their budget.

I am also not accepting any more people unless you bought your badge.

The first convention I worked at was a first year. They did not require staff members to buy badges, but they also did not break even. They lost a few thousand dollars, sure, but they knew the risks. As I mentioned in another topic, if the convention doesn't make its money back, the con heads end up paying however many thousands of dollars back completely out of pocket. Some conventions can afford to pay for their staffs badges, some cannot. And some that cannot, do anyway. In any case, I'm not in charge of EFNW, but that's how it's being run this year.

As for staff VS volunteers... I'm not sure if we have volunteers. Don't quote me on that, as I don't get into the logistics of the convention. I'm just one of the many grunts who follows orders. But I haven't heard a lot about volunteers, just staff members. That may be all that EFNW is planning to have. I'm also fairly certain the staff will be getting some perks. The con paying for their badge just isn't one of them.

Not seen any mention of volunteers so far just staffers.

The typical break down is like this:

Chair: The head honcho and figure head for the con.
Board: Those in charge of all the various aspects and decision making for the con.
Staff: Take orders from the board to make sure all the various aspects of the con are taken care of.
Volunteers: Take care of the grunt work the staff relays to them to get everything done. Usually just helping with things like set up, strike, goforer work and additional security.

I would suggest doing something to compensate the staff, as they are still a volunteer work force in the end, for their hard work. If not free entry this year than worked out in the budget they get in for free next year. Volunteering is not usually without its reward either, but typically a volunteer has to put in so many hours and they might get something like a free shirt, or other goodies, a free pass the following year and maybe even consideration to be part of staff.

I have done my share of volunteer work at various cons all across the country and even been approached to join staff at a couple, though I usually decline since I never live in the same town. Though, living in Portland, Seattle tends to be easy to get to.

I'm fairly certain all the staff will be pitching in to help set-up and whatnot. As for volunteers, I don't know if, or how many, there plans to be. So far I haven't actually heard much about anyone volunteering, just staffing. Again though, I'm not in charge, I just deliver messages.

Also, I'm sure with the popularity this year, free staff badges are now a higher possibility next year. As I said before, I'm fairly certain the staff will be getting some perks. The con paying for their badge just isn't one of them. What they exactly are is not for me to know at this time, nor would it be public access anyway.

We can probably use more staff, provided you have already bought your badge. If you have not, there is not room for you, sorry.

Pretty much what Tales said. We can only take staff that bought their badge in time. Sorry.

I have my badge, why is everyone assuming I dont? That's kind of rude.

We are just asking because we have no way of telling. Also, it is kind of important, and if you didn't, it would end in tears. It is not entirely unreasonable to suggest that there may be a few people trying to sign up for staff to get in. Nobody is assuming anything.
