I don't know about a dedicated PMV room. Space is kinda at a premium. But I was planning/hoping on adopting the anime con setup. Basically, you open up the contest well before the con and everyone makes their videos and sends them in. Then a panel of judges (I have some ideas here) watches them and pares them down to a list of finalists (depending on how popular your contest (such as Fanime and Anime Expo's amv contests) you may have to prescreen for semifinalists.) Then at the con you take over the Main Theater for 30-60 minutes, show all the finalists, and everyone votes. Then you show the winners either at whatever main event (for anime cons this is usually the masquerade) or during the closing ceremonies.

But I would also like to see a PMV panel/workshop with people who make the videos talking about the process, their favorite videos and/or teaching people some things about how to make videos of their own.

Thoughts on that?

I think a panel/workshop/showcase would work well in a timeslot. Maybe PMV authors can be at the table, play one of their videos, and explain their methods and process a bit and take some Q&A.

Sounds like a good idea Mike.

Thanks. That way people can show off their stuff, people can watch some good videos, and people can ask questions and learn some stuff. Put it in a good enough timeslot based on the number of people hoping to present and I think it could work.

If memory serves me correctly regarding the convention space of that hotel, right off the top floor just a little down the hall next to the elevators (step off the elevators, and to your left) is a big event room, (not talking about the mega round dance floor. Its pretty large and I think you can close the curtains for darkness (not sure on that one) that place would be perfect for use as a movie theater space for said projector and equipment. It would keep media events and equipment (such as sound systems and lighting in a central place as I'd presume you'd hold the dance and larger draw (Guest of Honor) presentations in the main dance floor (Big circular room) (I know this hotel pretty well ;-) ) I'd presume the staff would use the Cascade Ballroom, all three sections for use as the dealers area, and the two smaller rooms as event space, further I'd presume that the con would utilize the Boardroom as ConOps (its what I'd do as its centrally located and relatively easy to find.

I believe you're referring to the Queen Anne room, which is actually going to be exclusively reserved for our dealer's den. We are trying to get a viewing room in the works, however.

*blinkblink* That small for the Dealers Den? In a configuration from another convention that I assisted with we utilized the Cascade (which is three medium sized rooms on the first floor combined/partitions removed) for our dealers den, used the smaller middle room for classes/clinics the main ballroom upstairs (big circle) for big media events/dances/Guest of Honor stuff, and that side room also on the top floor for a audio/video lounge.

The Cascade amounts to pretty much half of the event space, and there is a desire to have panel space that is a size in between basically everyone (the Ballroom) and very small (The breakout rooms on the first floor).

I'd personally like to have a space that affords a smaller, more personal scale for events/panels that may not appeal to/be a priority for everypony. For instance, there are some art and writing panels that I don't think would attract the entire convention, so putting it in the main ballroom would make it seem rather empty. I think though, they would attract enough people that the smaller rooms would overflow.

However, I'm not locking anything into place right now, since we're still lining things up. There are certainly still avenues to explore as we get closer to solidifying things.

Thank you for your input though DustnRain, it offers a helpful perspective.

Happy to help. If ya need any logistical assistance on site, or suggestions, let me know. I've just reserved myself a Dealers Table, so I'll be there if ya need me. I've done a wide array of con-support for around 10 years or so, so I'm happy to offer any advice!

Just a question regarding the dealers room; Will power will be available, or will we be on our own for power situations?
